San Jose Sharks 2018 1st Round Opening Show

One of the more amazing experiences I was a part of while in San Jose was the opening show ahead of player introductions.  My role as the Technical Services Manager for the SAP center was to oversee the lights, audio, video and production of the in arena and concourse displays.

Beginning in August of 2017 I began creating a pixel accurate after effects template that included a 20mm Daktronics Fascia, measured 14160 pixels wide by 48 pixels high.  A 20mm Daktronics Upper Halo, measure 2796 pixels wide by 96 pixels high, a 20mm Daktronics Middle Halo, measured 2560 pixels wide by 64 pixels high, a Main Video Display with a 10mm pixel pitch measuring 736 pixels wide by 544 pixels high and a 20 mm Daktronics lower ring, measuring 1536 pixels wide by 48 pixels high.  The template also took into account the measured space between the video displays and was designed to create the illusion that it was large canvas that content could freely pass between.  Some of the issues to overcome were mapping the first and last pixels and distorting and accuratley portraying content on different sized and shaped screens with different pixel dimensions

The largest challenge to overcome, however, was synchronizing the show.  In the video below you can see the screens are tied to the music, the on ice projection system, the colored LED wristbands and the theatrical lighting.  This was accomplished using the a pre-recorded SMPTE timecode audio track that was converted to a .wav file.  There were several players in use.  A primary timecode, a backup timecode, and a primary audio file.  Then on the concourse there was a coordinated video display across 16 video walls and 21 LED walls of varying size with a 5 minute countdown to the beginning of the show to help ensure a maximum number of people got to witness the show.

The video below was shot in 3-D so pull the camera around to help gain an appreciation for the full scope of the presentation

SAP Center Upcoming Events Fascia Artwork

One of the many tasks I had while working at the SAP Center in San Jose was to create digital ads for upcoming shows and events.  This was a welcome task at times to get back into a creative mode, below are some samples from some of the shows.  Each sample here shows 1920 px of the total 14160 pixels that the ribbon board was made up, the design philosophy on most pieces was to create a repeatable graphic of 1770 x 48 and duplicate 8 times.  The feeling being that with the size of the 23mm Daktronics ribbon it would be difficult to focus on more than 1/8th of the 1100ft ribbon board

Iowa Wolves 2017-18 Creative

Below are two different projects that I created for the 2017-18 season of the Iowa Wolves.  The Wolves are the rebranded Iowa Energy of the NBA G-League and play at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA.
The first is a logo transition piece.  This was created in after effects using the saber plug in and using the mask tool to first outline the state Iowa with the Wolves secondary logo, then a burst and it transitions to their primary logo.  There are matching pieces made for the fascia and auxiliary boards in the arena
The second piece is a animated wheel of emoji's to be used as a keyed layer on the video board.  The wheel plays through the Ross Xpressions system.  The wheel is designed to start with the wheel already in motion so as to mask the previous outcome, it spins for six seconds and lands on a determined outcome, the final frame is held for 10 seconds, but in Xpressions, freezes on the last fame.  The Wolves have ten created fully functioning wheels with icons and a template to create more.

Iowa Wild 2016-2017 Graphics

Below are a variety of different projects that I created for the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League prior to the 2016-2017 season. the first one is part of an in-arena promotion where one fan with an exceptionally dirty car in the parking lot wins a free car wash from Executive Laser Wash in Des Moines. The concept is that the dirty screen is wiped away by a windsheild wiper to reveal the dirty car promotion winner
The next video is a sample for the in-arena groups welcome message. In this animation a zamboni with the America's Best log passes over the ice and removes the group name, seconds later a new group name appears and then is removed again, the file is set to loop until all group names have appeared.
The next video plays after the third goal scored by the Iowa Wild. For this promotion every fan in attendance receives a coupon for free potato oles at Taco Johns when the Iowa Wild score three goals in a game. There are two prior videos for the first two goals of the game. The first lights up the "O" and changes to "Unwrap the 1st Goal." The second lights up the "L" and then changes to "unwrap the 2nd Goal" This one of course now lights up "OLE" and "Unwraps Free Oles"
The last video is a custom animation that updates prior to each game to denote the game theme, sponsoring partner and team matchup. This plays on all arena screens, the web broadcast and video boards prior to each game.

Well Fargo Arena Video Board Open House

The video above showed as we unveiled the new $2,500,000 video board and control room at Wells Fargo Arena on September 26th. The video highlights the past ten years of events at the arena and looks forward to the events coming up in the next year. The project to upgrade the arena included replacing the entire center hung scoreboard, the video control room, cabling and cameras as well as replacing the existing metal halide lights with instant on LED lights.
